For Women, Whatever Side of the Walking

Where You Are

Movement One. Being seen before anything gets fixed.

James H. Tippins

You have likely spent years being the one who held it together, and now you are being asked to hold this too, the end of the marriage, on top of everything else you were already carrying without anyone quite noticing how much that was. You know the schedule of every person in your house better than you know your own. You have absorbed other people's moods as information you needed in order to keep things steady, and now the steadying is required for something no one taught you how to steady, your own life coming apart in ways the people around you keep asking you to explain calmly.

You might be the one who left, carrying a decision you made after years of trying everything you knew how to try, and now fielding the quiet judgment of people who only saw the version of the marriage you let them see. You might be the one who was left, discovering that the effort you kept giving was never going to be matched, and learning that from the outside instead of the inside, in a conversation you did not choose the timing of. You might be somewhere in between, having given up trying to name whose fault it was somewhere around the third or fourth year of trying, and simply arrived here, tired, at the actual end.

Whichever one is true, this begins the same way for everyone. Stop managing how this lands on the person hearing it. Not your mother, not your friends, not here. You are allowed to say the true thing about how this actually is, without softening it first for someone else's comfort.

What Women Carry Differently

You were likely raised, in one way or another, to treat your attentiveness to everyone else as the whole job, and a marriage ending does not relieve you of that training, it often intensifies it, because now there are kids who need reassurance, a family watching how you are holding up, and a version of yourself that has learned to read a room before it learns to ask what it actually needs. What that training rarely tells you is that you are allowed to be the one who is not okay. You are allowed to not have already processed this into something presentable. You are allowed to still be inside it.

This is not a program that will tell you to stop caring for the people who need you. It is a place where, for the length of this, you can stop reading the room and let someone actually read you.

The Movements Ahead

If questions of covenant and faithfulness sit underneath what happened in your marriage, the series at Vows speaks directly to that ground, and it was written from inside this exact walking. If a hard marriage rather than its ending is closer to where you are, It Is Not Your Fault or Responsibility may be the nearer door.

If you have not yet taken the short reflection to see where you actually are in this, it takes about four minutes and gives you a plain read before you go further.
