The Human Bleed

The vocabulary of the Human Bleed Project: Identity Bleed, Containment Architecture, the seven openings, the collapse and recovery cascades, the SCORE, and the two surgeries as applied at the scale of a life and an organization.

James H. Tippins. First published 2026.

Terms belonging to The Human Bleed Project and the Human Bleed pathway. Coined and defined by James H. Tippins. The full pathway is at autonomycommission.com/hbpathway.html and the personal entry point is at humanbleed.com. The Two Surgeries and Invisible Contracts are defined as governing law on their own pages; the entries below state how each applies inside the Human Bleed.

Identity Bleed
One destabilization of a person's sense of self losing containment and moving through several domains of a life at the same time, so that marriage, body, caregiving, money, sleep, grief, and numbing behaviors appear to fail together. What presents as several unrelated problems is one problem with several openings. Named in 2026 for work begun in 2023. It takes seven recognizable forms, named in The Seven Identity Bleeds (May 2026), beginning with the Provider Collapse. See Identity Bleed: There Is No Isolated Issue.
Containment Architecture
The discipline that answers Identity Bleed. The restoration of the self that was supposed to hold pressure in the first place, so that pressure in one part of a life stays in that part of the life. It has an order: excavation, then embodiment. Named in 2026.
Identity Bleed Theory
The academic form of the construct. A proposal that multi-domain destabilization following identity collapse is a single phenomenon with a predictable descent and a reversible cascade, rather than a set of co-occurring but independent problems.
The Bleed
A loss of containment. Something that was supposed to stay in one place does not. The exhaustion does not stay at work. It crosses into the body, the marriage, the sleep, the tone of voice. The bleed is the failure of containment itself, and it is what makes seven openings one event.
The Seven Openings
The seven domains through which Identity Bleed most often moves. Also called the seven sources on the organizational pathway. They are not seven diagnoses; they are seven doors the same thing walks through. See The Seven Openings.
Opening One, Relationship Instability
Divorce, separation, and the slow erosion of the partnership a person comes home to. The silence at dinner. The roommate you used to be in love with.
Opening Two, Hormonal and Physical Change
Menopause, perimenopause, and andropause moving energy, mood, focus, and sleep on a clock the person did not set, usually without language for it at home or at work.
Opening Three, Caregiving Load
The sandwich generation, holding children above and aging parents below at the same time. Being the floor the family stands on with no one standing under you.
Opening Four, Financial Pressure
Debt and the math that does not close, carried silently into every working hour, regardless of salary. The number as a verdict rather than a number.
Opening Five, Sleep and Nervous System Dysregulation
Exhausted and wired at once. A nervous system on watch all day that does not stand down when the lights go off. The opening where the other six arrive at night.
Opening Six, Grief and Identity
Loss that was never finished, and underneath it the question of who a person is now. The origin opening; the other six open in sequence from it.
Opening Seven, Numbing Behaviors
The drink, the screen, the order, the habit. What a person reaches for when the pain has nowhere else to go, usually the enforcement arm of an invisible contract.
The Collapse Cascade
The fifteen-link chain by which a destabilized identity becomes an organizational cost: identity destabilizes, certainty drops, fear rises, emotional regulation fails, sleep deteriorates, cognition narrows, communication degrades, conflict escalates, confidence erodes, ambition contracts, contribution shrinks, performance declines, retention risk spikes, replacement cost explodes, margin erodes. The organization first sees step twelve. The cause is at step one. See The Collapse Cascade.
The Recovery Cascade
The same chain running upward once identity restores: certainty returns, fear recedes, regulation recovers, sleep improves, cognition sharpens, communication becomes possible, conflict reduces, confidence returns, ambition re-engages, contribution grows, performance rises, retention improves, margin grows. It begins with the person and arrives at the balance sheet last.
The Compound Problem
The openings do not arrive one at a time and they do not add. They multiply. The person in divorce is also not sleeping; the person in perimenopause is also caregiving; the executive in financial distress is also drinking more.
The Signal
Step one of the pathway. What the organization sees (declining performance, absenteeism, a shortened fuse, withdrawal, retention risk) set against what it actually is (a marriage drifting, a parent in memory care, perimenopause, hidden debt, unprocessed grief, three bourbons a night, the identity question with no answer yet).
The SCORE
Step two of the pathway. The organizational diagnostic that maps which of the seven openings are active in a specific workforce, how they compound, the leadership bleed, retention risk, and the visibility gap between what the company sees and what is there.
The Visibility Gap
The proportion of active bleed in an organization that is invisible to it, because the eleven links before declining performance cannot be seen from the org chart.
The Two Surgeries
The intervention of the Human Bleed pathway, run in one order. Surgery One before Surgery Two, without exception. See Excavation Before Embodiment.
Surgery One, Excavation
Step four of the pathway. Restoring the internal foundation: identity recognized independent of outcomes, the invisible contracts behind numbing behavior dissolved, a culture where honesty is possible before the crisis, and the leader seeing himself in the problem first. You do not build a self. You find the one you buried.
Surgery Two, Embodiment
Step five of the pathway. Installing what holds: identity-based emotional regulation under pressure, leadership from sovereignty rather than performance anxiety, conflict navigation, the financial conversation moved from shame to strategy, and team culture architecture. Communication lives here as an expression of the recovered self, never as a separate skills program. Practice laid over an unexcavated mask only hardens the performance.
The Outcomes
Step six of the pathway. The recovery cascade delivered to four recipients at once: the organization, the individual, the marriage, and the family. Better bottom lines, better lives, better futures, better generations.
The Eight Dimensions
Where the organizational cost actually lands: mental clarity, physical capacity, emotional regulation, character under pressure, confidence, relationships across the team, productivity, and the sense that the work means anything.
The Human Bleed Project
The body of work by James H. Tippins mapping Identity Bleed at two scales, the person and the organization, and the pathway that reverses it. Personal entry at humanbleed.com; corporate engagement framework at autonomycommission.com/hbpathway.html. See The Human Bleed Project: Where It Came From.
